“She’s [gabiklaf.com] been down for almost two months, which has taught me a lot about letting go of my baby, what defines me, and my ego; and now,  I sit and look at her again and wonder how to touch her again. Like the first time again, I want it to be so romantic, just perfect.”

- an email to a new online friend

And so, here I go….

There’s a homeless guy at the end of the street who directs the traffic. He stands there, very intense and passionate, doing his job. Florescent pink plastic whistle in mouth, wad up stack of paper in right hand, arms flapping all over the place. No one pays him to do it. I don’t think anyone pays attention to him either.

I do. I love the homeless man. Yesterday, when he tried to help me cross the street, I smiled and looked the other way. He made me uncomfortable. Tomorrow, I’m going to cross the street a few times just so that he can direct me safely to the other side. Just to thank him. Just to make him feel important. That’s what I told my kids when they asked me, “Why does he do it if no one pays him?”

Blessed Chaos

light inspiration for the sou, towards enlightenment, one step at a time

Doesn’t your life sometimes feel too chaotic? Too much going on, too much to think about, too much to remember, too much to do, too much too much’s. We sometimes get so busy in the “to do” that we lose touch with the “to be”. But, even in the sometimes maddening pace of modern life, there are blessings, there is silence between the notes, starlight scattered in the darkness of the vast night sky. In my book of affirmations for enlightened being, Breathe, that is all I talk about. How do I bring the magic into the chaos? How do I bring in color to my sometimes gray-tones world? How do I shine light into corners that, until now, only held darkness

I found this home video from many years ago and was amazed at the blessed chaos of it all. Kobi is trying to recite the traditional blessings for the Jewish Shabbath (a calm thing), as our kids jump, twirl, dance, construct pyramids, and are in constant motion. I look at them, so cute, so round and chubby, so precious and small; and wonder how much of that time, in that blessed chaos, how much of that time could I see the sacredness of it all??

Discovering The Artist Within

Written by Gabi on . Posted in Inspiration and Appreciation

light and inspiration for the soul

I was always extremely jealous of Jodi. Jodi made jewelry, amazing pottery, and didn’t have kids waking her up in the middle of the night for her breasts. And, I was jealous of Julie. Julie wrote plays, acted in the local theater, and, also, didn’t have kids waking her up in the middle of the night for her breasts. And Nicole. Nicole painted, wrote poetry, and did have kids, but they were way passed the age of waking her up in the middle of the night for her breasts. I wouldn’t mind if Kobi woke me up in the middle of the night for my breasts; but, kids, exponentially less exciting.

I was working too hard to make money, doing many important things, running too fast. Artistic stuff means you have to stop, develop, practice, enjoy, get inspired, relax. Relax? Me? I didn’t even know how to walk slowly(and I used to try to; tried really hard). And so, it was never an option. My way to deal with the pain that was in my soul was to stay busy, busy, busy. I learned that lesson well watching my parents. So, now, month 18 of traveling the world; I realize something amazing- I have become an artist! I’m tickled to death to talk to you about how that happened for me, and how that can happen for you, too. (Artists beware: you will love to hear what you already know.)

How To Give a Dog or Cat a Pill

Written by Gabi on . Posted in Inspiration and Appreciation

My father sent this to me, and it’s just hysterical. Animal lovers, you’ll love this. It was an anonymously forwarded e-mail so I hope someone doesn’t sue me for all sorts on infringement laws. Just had to share. So, if you know who owns rights to it, please tell me and I’ll give them full credit for bringing laughter into my morning. Enjoy!

1.
Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cats mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Let’s Set The World On Fire

Written by Gabi on . Posted in Inspiration and Appreciation, Who Is Gabi Klaf?

Me, setting the world on fire, alive....

It happened again tonight. I can’t control it, and neither would I want to, if I could. It hits me. Like a black cast iron pot in the dead of night, it bashes into my head. YACK! And, I can do nothing, nothing, but fall deep, deep into that  abyss of dark, rich, Egyptian light. There is no other way for me to describe it. It is a dark light for my soul knows it. Very intimately.

It happens…and I’m gone. I’m somewhere else. My heart flutters (glitters actually), my soul leaps, my frequency blurs and hits a light, high, iridescent buzz.  And it seers right through my entirety. It’s happened only twice before in my life but it happened tonight, and I’m a spark plug. I’m totally outta here.

Nothing- What My Youngest Daughter Teaches Me

Written by Gabi on . Posted in Inspiration and Appreciation, Parenting and Family Relations

my baby solai

My youngest daughter has come to cuddle with us in bed this morning. I lie there with her in my arms and breathe her in. She is, after all, my baby. She is the one that keeps me connected to that baby softness. She still needs my lap, and running into my arms momentarily after a fall (emotional or physical) still fills her up with all her soul needs. As I lie there, I pet her still round face, her still chubby hands, her soft remnants of a baby’s body.

Schools Are Killing Creativity

being creative and beautiful

I love TED Talks! I do. They are inspiration and absolutely blow me away. I have yet to hear a TED Talk that did not add immense value to my mind or soul. And, the very first TED Talk speaker I have ever heard is Sir Ken Robinson. Here is Ken in his witty, intelligent awesomeness reminding me why I homeschooled for two and half years, why we put our kids in the school we helped found in Northern Israel, and why we are currently world-schooling our kids as we travel  the globe. My favorite parts: the girl drawing God and Shakespeare in someone’s English class.

Hanging By My Boob

laughter for inspiration

My dear friend Heather just emailed this to me. No author, I’m still wiping the tears of laughter…

While conducting some business at the Courthouse, I
overheard a lady, who had been arrested for assaulting a Mammogram
Technician, say, “Your Honor, I’m guilty but…..there were
extenuating circumstances.”

The female Judge said, sarcastically, “I’d certainly
like to hear those extenuating circumstances.” I did too soooo…… I
listened as the lady told her story.
